The last thing most surfers would want to see is a great white shark circling their board. But when two of the notorious apex predators began swimming around Chuck Patterson earlier this week off San Onofre in northern San Diego County, he saw opportunity.
Patterson, 41, who lives in nearby Dana Point, paddled out at the same spot the next day with a high-definition camera mounted on a 10-foot pole, and used the apparatus to probe the murky green water around his board. The result..... More >

With the dust still settling after the Huntington Beach stampede several pros have already fled Southern California for Tahiti, where the Billabong Pro at Teahupoo is set to begin in just over a week.
There's more than ever on the line this year with the ASP's huge blade coming to excise 13 surfers from the invitee list of the next event in Europe. The list of potential victims is filled with stars, many of whom will be sent back to the minor leagues where they'll be spending..... More >
Stab Magazine author Charlie Smith loves nothing more than stirring the pot, and he does exactly that in his latest post dispatched after a long week of embedded raging at the US Open of Surfing.
Smith, you'll find, is a rare breed indeed. He's the first Australian since Peter Townend who has actually fallen in love with Huntington Beach, as evidenced by the following excerpt. Even the suggestion is likely to get him in hot water at home. To his credit, he doesn't care.More >
If you were under the impression that Joel Parkinson was born with his trademark style, then you'd be right. After stumbling upon this old gem of a segment from Parko's blog, you can catch all of the subtle movements that have made him into the seamless surfer (discounting the stitches in his foot of course) that he is today.
The video, which was shot by a local TV station in the mid-90s, features Parko on a chopstick of a board outfitted with a full-deck grip--hey, it was the..... More >
Here's a great little edit from Mick Fanning, of a Lower Trestles session that he had 2 weeks ago, just before the US Open started. Fanning is generally considered a rail surfer, not spending a whole lot of time above the lip, but at a skatepark like Lowers, even Mick cant help but let loose a bit. Its doubtful that we'll see any of these tricks being performed at Teahupoo which starts on August 23rd, but after that the tour heads back back to cali cali for the Lowers event. Micks..... More >
Do you avoid trade shows like the plague? If so you're not alone. That was one of the inspirations behind the formation of the Sacred Craft expo. Just think of it as the surf expo for people who hate surf expos.
These things get better each time, as evidenced by what's on tap this weekend, August 14 and 15, at the San Diego Convention Center.
For starters, the man being honored this year is none other than Simon Anderson, the three-fin thruster after validating the..... More >
"Shark Week" is over but a leading scientist's revelation that great white sharks appear to be growing in number off California is sure to generate more heightened interest in the apex predators -- particularly among swimmers and surfers.
"I think there are more sharks," Christopher Lowe, a professor at Cal State Long Beach and director of the university's Shark Lab, said during an exclusive phone interview. "And that's not a bad thing; it's a good thing."

Julian Wilson's much anticipated film Scratching the Surface premiered to a packed house at the Orange County Theatre for Performing Arts this past friday during the US Open in nearby Huntington Beach.
As the red carpet comes into view, nestled up against the corner of a sophisticated looking building in the middle of Orange County, a young bronzed australian with sun bleached blond hair and a puka shell necklace can be seen in the middle of a crowd of photographers and pro..... More >
