Australian Mick Fanning had a pretty good day at the office today. A handful of surf sessions at lowers with only one guy out, and $105,000 for his time. He surfed 4 heats, 35 minutes each. Im no math major, but did he just get paid $750 per minute to surf empty trestles today? You can't beat that with a stick. I have a feeling that Eugene will be making an appearance in San Clemente tonight.
Hurley made history by putting up $105k for first place at this year's Hurley Pro, the highest prize purse in surfing, and Mick just made history by winning it. Mick surfed like a machine in the final against Ventura's Dane Reynolds, who was the standout of the event up til the final. Mick caught the best waves of the heat, and surfed them fluidly, scoring a 17.4 two wave total. Dane got off to a slow start, not riding a wave until almost 15 minutes into the hat, and was never able to catch up. It was Dane's first final in a WCT event, and he absolutely crushed every heat leading up to the last one. He faced Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, and Bede Durbidge today. Not an easy draw anywhere, especially at trestles, and he was still able to post the highest heat total in both the quarters and semis.
Hopes for a real title race waned today, as Kelly Slater was unable to find a second score against Mick in their semi final. Fanning was in rhythm, picking the best waves of the heat, and unleashing his signature torquing top turns on them. Mick now moves into second place in the ratings behind best mate Joel Parkinson.
